How do you figure out what is in your heart? Then, how do you follow it?

I posed this question to friends on facebook and have gotten some interesting responses. I gained some valuable insights and advice but, some things just don't fit for me. I grew tired of "What color is your parachute?", read "The Alchemist", followed what my brain was telling me to do, listened to my gut, suggestions, and more suggestions. I've tried being many things and none seem to fit. I'm at a loss....

Ch-ch-changes

My first niece was born this week, Monday to be exact. She graced us with her presence late at night, over two weeks past her due date. Her name is Freyja and she's an adorable little gem. I just met this little girl and I already love her so much.

Another change happened on Tuesday, I left work. It was bound to happen at some point, I wish it was on a more positive note. During my lunch break, I was called down for a surprise HR visit, it was supposed to simply be questions about how I get information when training and meetings are scheduled (I had to call HR because I wasn't able to make a training that was the next day, which I found out about the week before). It quickly turned into an attack on my character and livelihood, having someone tell me after having to defend myself, that I probably shouldn't work with children with the amount of attitude that I was giving to a superior, someone with her "title". This was not the first time someone at my work talked down to me, like I was an imbecile. I was emotional and angry, no better time than the present, I left this impromptu meeting and clocked out. I handed my letter of resignation in the next day after, there was clarification from the HR Director to what the meeting was supposed to be about. When I asked that she sign a paper for my records, stating that she received my letter and the uniform shirts they had given me, she refused very condescendingly. She ended up saying "You demanded my time, now you are demanding my signature, you are not in the position to do either of those things."

Now, I get to wake up and think "What can I do with this new day?" rather than dreading going to work.

I haven't progressed with any of my 30 things, which is ok. I have about 11 more months to go. I plan on heading to Longwood Gardens in the coming week for their Christmas display, which I'm looking forward to.
December has been a weird kind of blur. I spent buying, spending time with others, roasting large amounts of nuts, and really getting in touch with my inner hermit. Yes, it reared it's ugly head. I became miserable, stopped walking, yoga has been cancelled...oh no! Walking returned and now I'm looking forward to my yoga and reiki class next week. Anger isn't pretty and neither is feeling depressed.

Which all this time off from work has helped me clean up my room a bit. It is still quite a mess but, I'm working on it. I have an attachment to stuff and slowly I've been getting rid of it. I had been going through some papers and reading some sappy shit I wrote in the early 2000's. I called myself a "depressing bitch" and threw it away. It felt good, really good.

I've also been developing a crazy interest in pinterest (ha). I enjoy seeing what other people have been posting and creating ideas that perhaps will come to term.

Ah well...I'm going to get back to drinking my coffee and job hunting. Here's to 2012!

It's been far too long since I've written here. I know I keep writing that but, I mean it. I'm taking a break from facebook at the moment. I really don't know what led me to decide that but, I am. In the past few weeks many things happened, the biggest that it was my birthday. I turned 30! I wrote about the 30 things I wanted to do in my 30th year, some practical, some not so much. I decided to focus on actually doing those things instead of lingering about admiring what other people were doing on facebook. I also noticed as I was giving my brother a ride home that he knew way too much about other people's lives and actually none about mine. We constantly have the same conversation over and over again. It is quite depressing. I realized that I have seen my friend's who live in Omaha, NE and Kansas City, MO, more than I have him. Maybe that will change or maybe not, who knows!

Here's to something new and fun! At least, I hope so.

I hadn't realized that it has been two months since I've updated! I just finished my second zine and that kind of tipped me off. So many things have happened! I went on my road trip to North Carolina with Bree, I got stung by a wasp checking out a peach tree, nights hangin' with friends, started back at work, and managing to keep busy. I wake up every morning and walk/jog (jolk or wog, if you are into those terms) which has helped me keep my sanity and have managed to consistently go to yoga & reiki weekly at Hawthorne Yoga.

I've recently decided to take a Sociology class at community college and apply for a Master's in School Counseling. Life is going....going....going. I should have more interesting things to write about but, I'm about to conk out.

Art viewing, porching sitting, and baptism

I started my weekend off unsure about going to the faculty show at my former place of employment. I must have tried on eight different outfits to find one semi-comfortable one. Then, I was headed to the opening reception about an hour late. I arrived, was blatantly ignored by my former boss, mixed my own sangria, looked at some art and headed off for drinks with some friends. We ended up as a group of nine and headed to The Wishing Well. It was a jovial night and I felt relieved that I wouldn't be going back to work there.

Saturday, I went to the Lansdowne Farmer's Market. I noshed on some free samples and walked through. I bought a cucumber from the Turning Roots Farm of Downingtown, they are reasonably priced and laid back. I ended up buying some pesto bread and realized then that I should always ask the price before I decide to buy it. It ended up costing $7! After the farmer's market, I headed to the post office where I was behind the stupidest customer ever. The clerk had to explain what insurance was, how it worked, and why she may need it. She still didn't understand and decided not get it, after 10 minutes. I must have had some face because, the clerk was like I almost lost my straight face looking at you. Seriously...it's just going to get worse.
I went swimming and spent the rest of my day on a porch with some family and friends. I ate a cheese sandwich and chatted with the gals about our contempt for one person, watched my brother and friend consume an entire bottle of rum, and was told I was pretty a lot.

Sunday, I ended up going to the cutest baby in the entire world's baptism. I found out about it the day before because for some reason my invitation didn't come. Stupid mailman, yes, I blame him personally.

Wow...

Life is going really good right now. I realize that I haven't written or shared anything in quite awhile. Facebook sort of took over that which, I'm trying to ween my addiction to that site.

The past few days have been really awesome. I have had a bunch of firsts and some really awesome friends.

I had never been hiking in the Wissahickon before or to the Chestnut Hill area. I drove to Chestnut Hill to meet my friend Patrice. We had delicious salads, grilled pear and goat cheese for me, at the Chestnut Hill Hotel while gossiping over cocktails. I had a rum drink called Captain's Punch, it was pretty good. The muddle orange kept getting stuck in my straw. Then, we drove to a secluded dead end street and went into the Wissahickon. It is quite beautiful and it was a breezy, mid-80's day. The hike in wasn't too bad, we sat at the Valley Green Inn and had some Strawberry Lemonade Margaritas, cheering to unemployment and leaving education.
We hiked out which was a little more taxing, particularly for Patrice who wasn't thinking ahead and wore sandals. There was definitely sweat dripping down my face.
It was a pretty spectacular day!

The next day, I was finishing up my zine that was supposed to be done in 24 hours. It was not, sorry 24 hour zine thing, I tried and the challenge was fun. I received a text from my friend Rocky, "Do you like lesbians and ukuleles?" So, instead of heading to The Wooden Shoe for a zine reading I opted to go to Helium to laugh my face off. I had never heard of any of the people performing before. It was Stamie Karakasidis, Kate Micucci, and Tig Notaro. I related and laughed most from the 15 minutes of Stamie, she talked about boobs and special needs kids. Seriously, hilarious. Kate Micucci, was adorable and played songs on her ukulele about becoming a nun, the happy song, an imaginary baby, and being a librarian with anecdotes inter weaved. Then, Tig Notaro was ridiculous and told stories, played off the audience, and did ridiculous impressions of inanimate objects. The laughing was infectious and I was glad I went. I consumed some gin and tonics which were pretty delicious, you can't really mess up a g&t.
Rocky, walked me back towards my friend Maureen's house, where I parked my car. Which I wasn't aware that the walk was as far as it was when I parked there. I came in and we chatted about our nights. Her husband vented about work and helping to build a skatepark (awesome!). Then, I made my way home.

I came home to a new Big Digits video on facebook. I love Big Digits and went to see them alot when I lived in Boston. I miss dancing like a fool with Brian and Olivia to them.

It's been awhile blog, I'm sorry.
I will be attempting to update this more often, I don't see why I haven't been doing it. I'm such a bad blogger sometimes. I haven't been looking at new images, watching animations and what not on youtube, just the same things everyday....ugh.
To start the new year off right, I'm following in my friend Nguyen's footsteps and writing down loads of new year's resolutions. There are twenty altogether and I'm sure some could be more elaborate but it's left open for interpretation.

1. Smile more.
2. Stop cursing in normal conversation (bring back the Amy Werts marking system?).
3. Cook at least two new meals a week.
4. Revise resume and update teaching clearances.
5. Make new friends and reconnect with old ones.
6. Find a teaching job, that pays decent and offers benefits, and take it.
7. Write my business plan and research feasibility.
8. Stop doubting myself.
9. Learn how to knit better.
10. Learn how to sew.
11. Create a space to make art.
12. Go on more photo walks.
13. Make more art.
14. Visit friends in other places.
15. Update my blog once a week.
16. Hang out with friends more, make plans and do them.
17. Have a wardrobe I want to wear.
18. Stop accumulating crap.

I'm posting this message because I think it's hilarious. A few weeks ago, I was hanging out with a group of friends and there's this dude, who is a friend of a friend, that I thought was cute. From the urging and advice of others, I sent him a message on myspace. This is completely out of character for me and I was a bit nervous about writing it, so I ended up writing it in cover letter format. Anyway, I did not get a response, but whatever his loss.
Here we go (some names have been changed):

Dear Mr.So and So,
I don't believe we were officially introduced, I'm Michelle. Ethel and Lola would insist on using my whole name but that's really not necessary but if you feel the need, it's Michelle Platt.
I'm writing this message in regards to the hanging out that happened on Friday night. I found it to be quite enjoyable and believe we should hang out again, perhaps on another Friday night in the near future.

Thing a Day, Day 1

I missed posting on Day 1. By the time I was finished my drawing it was nearing 1am, and my need for sleep was settling in. I managed to draw for about 40 minutes, you can tell I started to give up towards the end because the bottom just doesn’t seem to look right. I chose to draw because drawing is not my thing, I never really exclaimed “I love to draw”, in fact, it’s always been “Do I have to draw?”. It was also a little easier than pulling out all my other art supplies to make something else. Frankly, I don’t think it’s that bad for someone who doesn’t normally draw, and I think think it’s weird that it kind of looks like a face which was totally unintentional.

It wasn't intentional to ignore this blog, it just kind of happened. In the past month, I've tried to go to the gym three times a week, I lost five lbs, I've been working temporarily at the bookstore in textbooks (my last day is Monday), I've accepted a position at Fleisher for teaching art to kids on Saturdays, and I made some art. I'm trying really hard to stay positive about life and things in general. I think to myself about how thankful I am to have my family, friends, and good health. It's weird reflecting on life a year ago and how completely different it is.
This time last year, I was in the beginning stages of student teaching, living in JP, riding to Wellesley every day with Ben, and hanging out with my dear friends in Massachusetts. Now, I've lost my way, living at home, rarely talking with my Massachusetts friends, even Ben who I saw everyday for several months we haven't spoken since June, still looking for work, taking more tests to receive Pennsylvania certification, and filling out more applications. I'm not saying it's all bad, there's that cute baby, Anthony, that I hang out with, Megan moved back to Philly, thinking about moving to far off places for jobs, going to Mexico, drunken bbq, and all the other fun times that were had. A year...hmmm. Through it all one thing has remained consistent, my grandma. I think about her everyday, sometimes only in passing, other days for a substantial amount of time. It's been one weird year and I'm hoping that this one will be less so.

Moving on...I signed up for a thing-a-day, I should be posting here more often. The guidelines are that you create something every day for the month of February. My friend, Nguyen, sent me the information to get our creative juices flowing. There was a time when we would talk to each other and not be working on any artwork; we would talk about how we should. This should be a challenging but great help in pushing me to do something.

This coming Sunday, I'm volunteering at the Fleisher Print Love-In. I volunteered to make some artwork as well, so I got the linoleum cutting gear out. I made two designs and they came out fairly well, I still need to practice my printing (or maybe not print on my bed). The two images below are what I came up with.

I was angry today, something bubbled over inside of me and I just became so angry. I went to the gym, and ran while thinking about some of the things that are pissing me off lately. The Internet (I know, I know). I've had my fill of friend sites and instant messaging. I want mail and phone calls, I miss seeing people's handwriting and hearing people's voices. I miss seeing them all together. I want hugs and kisses, real life laughter. Defining moments are missed in my life. I'm pissed off at a few friends, although I won't go into detail. Some heart to hearts have to happen and new paths need to be paved. I'm pissed at myself. I'm still unemployed, I haven't been making any art, my room's a mess, and clearly, this is not where I saw myself in life. I'm here though and I should be trying to make the best of it, but I'm not. My anger needs to be refined into something worthwhile and productive. Any suggestions?

I found out a while ago that the "blog this" option on flickr crops the photo and sometimes they lose some of the appeal. I try not to use the "blog this" option but sometimes a good photo has to be shown without being taken.

I tried Persimmons for the first time the other day, at least I'm pretty sure it was the first time. They are a beautiful colored fruit, and sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.

This photo booth was at the Boston Children's Museum, apparently they got rid of the photo booths. Of course, they were kind of tucked away in the corner barely visible just waiting for the museum to be remodeled and the photo giants are now gone. I obsessively check my e-mail and I received one from Yo! Darkroom. They are having an exhibition of photographs by a New York artist named Hans Gindlesberger. The work is pretty amazing and I'm under the impression that it isn't digitally manipulated. Check out his work and perhaps come to the opening, it's on Saturday, the 17th from 4-7. Yo! Darkroom is located at 113 N.23rd St (btw. Arch and Cherry).

My friend Nguyen, she inspires me to think more about my own artwork. She just made this beautiful necklace, out of mineral and felt, who knew it would turn out this good.

I hate that word, "panty," that's not the story here. I have an active imagination, and I realized that I can not and probably never will be casual. I'm not the person to separate my emotions from my passions. How can someone be passionate about something but not have any feelings towards it?
I learned my lesson and somethings really aren't worth it. I'm in the position to reclaim things that have been forgotten, the memories that are dusted away and not relived. I'm taking back fondances, chimay induced dance parties, craft nights, baking for pleasure, drinking tea, and making things I love for people. I'm so sick of being overly filled with emotions and not having them go anywhere so I'm redirecting them to the people I know I love. I'm certainly not wasting my time on the wrong person anymore, right attributes, right idea, just simply the wrong person.

My eyes are welling up in tears. I'm tired, jobless, spend too much time at the dive bar, and have a crush on a man that will probably never really know how much we have in common or how deeply I cherish his embrace. I've changed and it's been continual since the death of my grandma in February. I still haven't figured out if the change is good or bad, but it's there and I have to accept it.

There's been tons of things going on in the lives of my best friends. I am glad I have them and love every moment I share with them. I am grateful for having them in my life and my heart hurts when they are sad and rejoices when they are happy.
I know this is probably the sappiest thing I could ever possibly write but it's the truth, plain and simple.

The Teeth played last night for free at Jefferson Square Park. The band played for about an hour and then I was whisked off to a roof to sip juice. I was driving, no 40's for me!

It's been a crappy 25th year, and I tend to focus on that. Last night was good, I had a fun time hanging with the old and the new.

I'm straying away from what I originally intended to do with this blog. Alas, I have started to think about making art again, and began doodling. There are bigger and better plans floating around in my head at the moment.

I started work today, it was orientation. I will be putting a lot of effort into this, probably more than I should.

I also spent my time in Boston, over the past two years, detesting moment after moment. Here I am, sitting in Pennsylvania, the place that I love, wondering when I will make it back to Massachusetts. I miss my friends, I miss my neighborhood. It was mine, it wasn't my brother's or my parent's, it was mine.

I've finished moving from Massachusetts to back home in Pennsylvania. It's been an interesting move, realizing that I have far more stuff than I could possibly need. I got rid of some of it but there's still enough that we had to rent a u-haul trailer to move the rest.

In my apartment, I lived on the third floor so I've been schlepping boxes, trash, and recyclables up and down three flights of stairs all week. To add to this, I went candlepin bowling on Monday night, and I sprained my knee. It was right after I had been mocking bowling injuries and right before we actually started the game, it was during the practice round. I iced my knee with a beer and managed to play two games just as crappily as I would if I hadn't busted my knee.

Right now, I'm still looking at a u-haul trailer full of stuff that I have to unload into my already filled room, in my already filled house.
